In Memoriam: Charles "Chuck" Detrizio

Charles Detrizio

11/12/1965 – 6/27/2020

We are heartbroken to announce the unexpected passing of our dear friend and partner, Charles Detrizio. A colleague to many at the firm for nearly two decades, Chuck played an instrumental role in the formation, growth, and direction of Sherman Atlas. Sherman Atlas took great pride in Chuck, not simply because of his intelligence and superior work ethic, but also because of his kindness and passion, which has helped shape the culture that Sherman Atlas so deeply values.

Chuck was special to each of us. With vigor, he pursued everything of importance to him to the fullest. He was an outstanding lawyer, humbly the smartest guy in any room, and a proven leader in his field. Beyond just his wits, Chuck understood that being a counselor involved far more than advising. He approached his role holistically by taking the time to listen and learn, and in doing so, Chuck came to see many of his clients as lifelong friends. Chuck also understood the importance of perseverance and creativity. There was no matter too complicated for Chuck and no challenge too great. Chuck was so very well respected by his colleagues and served as a beloved mentor to many young lawyers.

The same verve and passion that Chuck so selflessly poured into his work, he also directed toward his coworkers, friends, and family. Chuck was a loyal confidante and an endless resource for each of us — for great restaurants, great vacations and great books — truly the go-to guy. Having grown up in Hoboken, New Jersey, working in his family’s locksmith business, Chuck was New Jersey proud but also loved to travel. From his favorite towns in Portugal, Caldas da Rainha and Evora, to the Napa Valley wineries in California, Chuck enjoyed seeing the world and witnessing firsthand the richness of the human experience.

Notwithstanding how hard Chuck worked, and far more important than any professional accolade, Chuck always prioritized his family. He and his wife, Catherine, had a beautiful marriage and wholeheartedly knew how to have a great time, whether out for a cocktail or exploring the world on long trips, which Chuck excitedly loved to plan. Chuck also took great pride in his children, Alegra and Michael, and parenting them was one of his greatest joys.

Chuck was so proud to be a part of founding and building Sherman Atlas and worked every day to make it a special place. Our loss could not be more profound, yet we take comfort knowing that his impact on our firm and our people will endure.
